Capturing Value from Data: Exploring Factors Influencing Revenue Model Design for Data-Driven Services
In recent years organizations have started utilizing big data and advanced analytics not just to support decision-making to raise process efficiencies, but also to engage in new data-driven services. These data-driven services complement the current product and service portfolio and create additional value for customers. In order to capture the value created, organizations need to design sustainable revenue models consisting of a revenue(how) and pricing (how much) mechanism. In order to develop a deeper understanding of one part of the decision-making process on revenue models, we apply a qualitative study and analyze the results through the lens of rational choice theory. Based on the interviews, we derived four factors – service characteristics, provider interests, customer interests, and market factors -influencing the design. By this, we contribute to the general understanding of the design of revenue models and enable further investigation into this field of research
GreedyBoost: An Accurate, Efficient and Flexible Ensemble Method for B2B Recommendations
Recommender systems have achieved great success in finding relevant products and services for individual customers, e.g. in B2C markets, during recent years. \ However, due to the diversity of enterprise clients\u27 requirements it is still an open question on how to successfully apply existing recommendation techniques in the B2B domain. \ \ This paper presents GreedyBoost --- an accurate, efficient and flexible ensemble method for product and service recommendations in the B2B domain. Given a set of base models, GreedyBoost can sequentially add base models to the ensemble by a linear approach to minimize training error, so that the ensemble process is efficient. Meanwhile, GreedyBoost does not have any special requirement on base models and evaluation metrics, so that any kind of client requirements and sale \\& distribution purposes can be adapted. Experimental results on real-world B2B data demonstrate that GreedyBoost can achieve higher recommendation accuracy compared with two popular ensemble methods
The present work presents a precise method for measuring the lower jaw using cone
beam computed tomography (CBCT) and answers questions about the quantification of
vertical and transversal
dimensions of partially edentulous and edentulous mandibles respectively. The amount
of available bone in atrophied lower jaws is shown to specify the indication of the
functional rehabilitation by dental implants.
For this purpose, 68 patients out of 715 CBCT datasets, which were taken between 2008
and 2014 in an oral surgery practice in Zwickau / Saxony, were selected according to
appropriate criteria. All included patients were divided into two groups, so that a group
consisting of 43 patients with edentulous lower jaws (age about 69.8 years) could be
compared to a second group of 25 patients (age about 62.8 years) with an anterior
residual dentition. At first, every record was three-dimensional aligned using a
standardized procedure. Thereafter it was measured on six posterior and five anterior
tooth positions in two vertical and three, respectively five horizontal distances. To
determine the methodical measurement error, five CBCT datasets were measured in
triplicate and the resulting measurement differences were evaluated.
An insignificant age difference of approximately five years separates group 1 and
group 2. The number of women outweighs both groups. The bone height in lateral
anterior region of edentulous patients is greatest at approximately 23 ± 1 mm, and the
caudal cortex is 4.1 mm thick on average. At the mandibular symphysis it is 6.2 mm thick
and so 50% stronger. When measuring farther distally, the bone height drops
continuously to the position of the first molar. The angulation of the maximum craniocaudal
extension is on average between 11 ° and 19 ° to the longitudinal axis and thus
corresponds to the standard abutments provided by the dental implant manufacturers.
Patients with an anterior residual dentition have with approximately 5.2 mm significantly
more bone height in all measuring positions of the posterior region than edentulous
patients. In all measurements of both groups, significantly less bone height can be found
in women than in men, with an average difference of 2.2 mm.
It is shown, that the lower jaw width is reduced in the anterior region and the lower bone
height in the posterior jaw. when measuring farther distally According to the results of this
work implantation is significantly more frequent by using 75% of the caudal cortical bone
in the anterior mandible. Based on the individual measurement positions, 25% more mini
implants (Ø 2.1 mm) and 21% more standard implants (Ø 4.1 mm) can be inserted.
Seven out of 43 patients, who would receive two interforaminal implants, benefit from
bicortical anchoring due to insufficient bone height for a monocortical implantation.
Additionally, in 20 instead of seven out of 43 edentulous patients a prosthetic restoration
on four standard Ø 4.1 mm interforaminal implants is only realizable if the caudal cortex
is engaged. In this study, this equates to 30% more patients who can be treated with
dental implants.
The therapeutic benefit of bicortical anchorage is on the one hand the possibility of using
longer implants, on the other hand the enhancement of the indication of dental implants
when treating patients with reduced bone supply. The posterior bone analysis shows,
that short implants with a length of less than 8 mm can be used two to three times more
often compared to a length of 10 mm and four times as often with ultrashort implants
(length 4 mm). Basically, the shorter the implant, the more often it can be inserted in
edentulous posterior jaws. Bicortical anchorage in this region can only be exceptionally
realized if sufficient bone width lateral to the mandibular is available.
The presented work shows here as well, that the vestibular space is up to 7% (toothless
lower jaw) or to 18% (lower jaw with anterior residual dentition) wider than 6 mm.
This study presents a reproducible method, whose measurement error correlates with
the values of previous CBCT accuracy studies using software-based length and angle
measurement tools. Given the high number of edentulous patients, who can only receive
dental implants through bicortical anchoring, further clinical trials are required to evaluate
the long-term success. Furthermore, the exact biomechanical effects of bicortical
anchorage of different implant systems in mandibles should be investigated. Due to the
growing clinical importance of short or ultra-short implants in atrophied mandibular
posterior jaws, long-term studies are necessary to reassess the results of previous fiveyear
observations, weigh up complications and limitations and make reliable predictions
relating their success rate
Designing Chemical Emergency Response Systems Based on Open Data
Emergency situations call for reliable information to allow for an effective and timely response. While digitalization penetrates industry sectors at an increasing rate, advances in information technology are not fully leveraged in emergency situations today. Building upon the paradigm of openness in form of open data, we propose a solution that connects government-provided emergency services with private sector expertise and resources. We apply a design science research approach to design an artifact that provides information in real-time to fire departments and medical staff in case of chemical substance incidents. We showcase that by providing open data, private sector organizations acknowledge their responsibility to share critical data while creating value in the process. Our contribution in this paper is threefold: First, we derive design requirements for artifacts to address chemical substance incidents. Second, we design and evaluate an artifact to showcase its suitability. Third, we showcase value creation through open data
Real-time live-cell imaging technology enables high-throughput screening to verify in vitro biocompatibility of 3D printed materials
With growing advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing technology, the availability and diversity of printing materials has rapidly increased over the last years. 3D printing has quickly become a useful tool for biomedical and various laboratory applications, offering a tremendous potential for efficiently fabricating complex devices in a short period of time. However, there still remains a lack of information regarding the impact of printing materials and post-processing techniques on cell behavior. This study introduces real-time live-cell imaging technology as a fast, user-friendly, and high-throughput screening strategy to verify the in vitro biocompatibility of 3D printed materials. Polyacrylate-based photopolymer material was printed using high-resolution 3D printing techniques, post-processed using three different procedures, and then analyzed with respect to its effects on cell viability, apoptosis, and necrosis of adipogenic mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). When using ethanol for the post-processing procedure and disinfection, no significant effects on MSCs could be detected. For the analyses a novel image-based live-cell analysis system was compared against a biochemical-based standard plate reader assay and traditional flow cytometry. This comparison illustrates the superiority of using image-based detection of in vitro biocompatibility with respect to analysis time, usability, and scientific outcome
On the bistable zone of milling processes
A modal-based model of milling machine tools subjected to time-periodic nonlinear cutting forces is introduced. The model describes the phenomenon of bistability for certain cutting parameters. In engineering, these parameter domains are referred to as unsafe zones, where steady-state milling may switch to chatter for certain perturbations. In mathematical terms, these are the parameter domains where the periodic solution of the corresponding nonlinear, time-periodic delay differential equation is linearly stable, but its domain of attraction is limited due to the existence of an unstable quasi-periodic solution emerging from a secondary Hopf bifurcation. A semi-numerical method is presented to identify the borders of these bistable zones by tracking the motion of the milling tool edges as they might leave the surface of the workpiece during the cutting operation. This requires the tracking of unstable quasi-periodic solutions and the checking of their grazing to a time-periodic switching surface in the infinite-dimensional phase space. As the parameters of the linear structural behaviour of the tool/machine tool system can be obtained by means of standard modal testing, the developed numerical algorithm provides efficient support for the design of milling processes with quick estimates of those parameter domains where chatter can still appear in spite of setting the parameters into linearly stable domains
